We watched the dot-com boom. We watched it collapse. We watched Google eat the web, Amazon eat retail, and a dozen companies nobody'd heard of turn into the most valuable institutions on the planet. We have a decent antenna for when something real is happening versus when the press release machine is just working overtime.

Something real is happening at Anthropic.

In April 2026, Anthropic's annualized revenue passed OpenAI's for the first time. The company that built Claude — not ChatGPT, Claude — is now out-earning the company that started this whole race. And the person running its operations holds a degree in English Literature.

Read that again, slowly, if you need to.

Daniela Amodei graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2009 with a BA in English Literature, Politics, and Music. Summa cum laude. University Honors, College Honors, Literature Department Honors, Dean's List. She didn't just pass through — she won the Senior Thesis Colloquium. She was also on a classical flute scholarship.

So how does someone with that background end up co-founding one of the most consequential technology companies in the world? The same way it's always happened with the best operators I've watched over 30 years: they did the work in front of them, moved toward harder problems, and didn't let other people's definitions of "qualified" slow them down.

The Career Nobody Would Have Written as a Screenplay

No computer science degree. No PhD. No traditional "founder" background. And yet she is now President of the company that just out-earned OpenAI.

The Numbers, Because They Are Genuinely Staggering

Here is where I need you to put down whatever else you're doing and actually look at these numbers, because they are not normal.

Reminds me of covering Salesforce in the early 2000s. Marc Benioff was pitching subscription CRM to a room of people who thought software had to be installed from a CD. Nobody took it seriously. It took Salesforce roughly 20 years to hit $30 billion in annual revenue. Twenty years of grinding, building, selling, and proving the model.

Anthropic did it in under three years.

$1 billion in January 2025. $9 billion by end of 2025. $30 billion by April 2026. That is 30x growth in 15 months. The fastest revenue expansion in enterprise software history, according to multiple financial analysts.

And here is the detail that really gets me: Anthropic did this spending four times less on compute than OpenAI. OpenAI is projected to spend $125 billion per year on training by 2030. Anthropic's projection for the same period is around $30 billion. Same race. One quarter of the cost. OpenAI projects $14 billion in losses for 2026. Anthropic projects positive free cash flow by 2027.

That is not just winning. That is winning differently.

Some VCs have reportedly offered to sell their homes for Anthropic shares.

Why Daniela's Background Is Not Incidental — It's the Strategy

Here is the part that I think gets underreported.

Anthropic doesn't hire like a typical AI company. They hire almost exclusively from computer science, mathematics, or physics backgrounds. That's the default. That's the assumption baked into every job description.

Daniela Amodei has built a company that explicitly looks for something different. And she's said it out loud, to ABC News, in plain language: "In a world where AI is very smart and capable of doing so many things, the things that make us human will become much more important instead of much less important."

That's not a quote from a philosophy professor. That's from the President of a company currently approaching a $1 trillion valuation.

What Makes This Story Different From Every "Unlikely Founder" Story

I want to push back gently on one framing that's been circulating on LinkedIn and in the press.

People keep presenting Daniela Amodei as a kind of surprising exception — the literature graduate who somehow snuck into AI. Like she got lucky or found a loophole. That's the wrong read. And I think it undersells what she actually built.

She didn't wander into AI. She spent five years at Stripe — one of the most operationally demanding companies in tech — building recruiting infrastructure and managing risk. Then three years at OpenAI rising to VP level. Then co-founded a company from scratch and scaled it to a valuation approaching $1 trillion in under five years.

Also: she was named in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2026. Her net worth, per Forbes in February 2026, is $7 billion. These are not the numbers of someone who found a loophole.

That's not a story about someone with the wrong background who got lucky. That's a story about someone who understood that the skills that make organizations actually work — communication, judgment, people, policy — are not soft skills. They're load-bearing walls.

What This Means If You're a Developer, Founder, or Just Someone Watching the AI Race

The AI industry has a credentials problem. Not a shortage of them — an overvaluation of the wrong ones.

The implicit assumption in tech has been that the people who build important things have to look a certain way: PhD, top CS program, ex-Google or ex-Meta, series of startups. The framework made some sense when the hard part of building software was purely technical.

It makes less sense when your product talks to doctors about diagnoses, helps lawyers draft contracts, advises students on their futures, and processes the most personal data of hundreds of millions of people. That work requires technical skill — absolutely. But it also requires judgment. Communication. Ethical reasoning. Understanding of power, language, and consequence.

Those are humanities skills. And the person who built the company now poised to become the most valuable AI company in the world has them — not despite her background, but because of it.

Daniela Amodei didn't succeed in spite of studying literature. She succeeded, at least in part, because she understood what literature teaches: that how you say something matters, that institutions are made of people, and that the long-term reputation of any powerful thing depends on whether it deserves trust.

Anthropic has earned more enterprise trust than any AI company in history. That's not an accident.

She didn't succeed in AI despite studying literature. She succeeded because of what literature actually teaches: how to say things that matter, to people who are listening.
